The red “X” you are referring to comes up when there is no speaker connected to the system. Would recommend you to plug in the Headphone/external speakers on the computer to check speakers functionality. If the red X goes away after plugging the headphone, then please run Windows Audio Playback Diagnose and Repair from the below MS FIX-IT:
Please reply if you have any further questions.

Problem
User cannot connect external speakers or Headset to computer. If we connect head set mic is working fine but not the headset speakers, but tere is an internal speaker in side the PC giving us small play sounds. Since this inside speaker is too small we cannto hear the sound in good quality. There is an easy way to by pass your speaker connection to external speakers or headset (PC back side jack or PC front side jack).
OS-WIN 7 Professional
SETP-1
Click control panel
Click Sound
In Playback tab you can see the speakers
Single click on the speakers and right click and "disable" it,
Now speaker will disappear
SETP-2
On your right bottom (near time) of your screen find speaker icon (with red x mark)
Right click on it
Select troubleshoot (if asked next click next otherwise wait) –Just wait until trouble shoot ends
Once ends Troubleshoot may ask which jack panels you want to use….REAR or FRONT…
Choose according to your wish….and connect your speaker or headset
No you fixed the problem, Enjoy.
