Basic water softeners use salt brine to regenerate the softening ability of the water softener. Pure rock salt is what you need for this Dishwasher. Maybe in Canada or Europe they have "Dishwasher Salt" but here in America I expect it is hard to find. I used "Ice Cream Salt" which is pure rock salt used for making homemade Ice Cream. It comes in small packages. Use only pure rock salt, nothing with additives which may damage the softener..
In the bottom of the dishwasher under the lower basket on the left side is a sort of triangle white plastic lid on the "Salt Aid" Brine tank. This is where you put the salt. Unscrew the lid counter clockwise. Use the funnel that comes with the dishwasher to help you fill the tank with salt. It takes around 3.5 lbs of rock salt, most of a 4 lb box of "Ice Cream Salt". When the salt quits flowing into the tank through the funnel, it is full. Remove the funnel and clean up any spilled salt from the inside of the dishwasher. Fill the tank up level with the top of the tank with salt. With the tank full of salt, get a small pitcher or water glass and then fill the tank with water over the salt until it is full to the rim. Reinstall the lid. Make sure the lid is put on straight, snug, but not too tight. Your water softener brine tank is now ready to go! Your "SALT AID" warning light should now go off on the front of the dishwasher. The warning light will not go off if you do not fill the salt tank with water. The "Brine Solution" (Salt Water) is what is used to regenerate the softener.
When the salt is all used up, the "SALT AID" warning light is supposed to come back on telling you when to refill the brine tank with salt & water..
Using the softener will help keep your dishes cleaner and keep the dishwasher from getting all limed up inside. It is a good thing and a class A feature.
Too bad such a nice appliance did not have a manual written by a good technical writer! There is nothing about the maintenance of the "Salt AID" in the manual. It looks like it is written in Chinglish and I expect they do not know what a water softener is over there.
