By tilting the mower back on its rear wheels you're allowing the engine to catch up by removing the load of the grass being cut then reloading it when you let it roll on all four again. Then it stumbles and tries to die again. There are variable contributing reasons for this to be. Possible combinations of reasons. Check your air filter and clean it or replace it. Likely you have a fuel system starving the engine under a load primarily. That will require the carburetor be removed and checked out/cleaned. The spark plug will possibly have carbon built up on it from the poor burn and will need cleaned/replaced as well. If this started happening after a hard stall, like from mowing into a heavy clump of grass or hitting a sprinkler or curb, the flywheel key could be sheared which retards ignition timing. Also if that's the case inspect your blade.
