Yes it can. It may throw more oil up the cylinder than usual which can be more difficult for the oil scraper ring to remove on the downward stroke of the piston. Also, you may cause more crank case pressure than normal which can cause oil to be ejected out of the breather system. It is then burnt along with the fuel. It is best to drain the oil down to the full level if you can.

When too much oil reaches the crankcase of the lawn mower, it will cause the oil sump to overflow. An overflowing oil sump will affect the function of the crankcase. ... Therefore, the signs of too much oil in lawn mower are oil splatters all over the muffler, white smoke from the muffler and the engine has a hard start.

What happens if you overfill oil in riding lawn mower?

Effects of Excess Oil in a Lawn Mower

The lawn mower engine would need to produce more heat than usual, which also leads to overheating. Moreover, excess oil will negatively affect the motion of the crankcase. If the oil drowns the crankcase, you need to remove it as fast as possible.

Why does my Cub Cadet smoke when I start it?

If the lawn mower engine produces black smoke, this indicates that the carburetor is getting too much fuel (or "running rich"). Similarly, if the carburetor choke is stuck closed, the lawn mower engine will not be able to draw in enough air to create the proper air-fuel mixture.

What causes a riding mower to smoke?

Your lawn mower's carburetor regulates the ratio of gasoline to air mixture. If the carburetor isn't getting enough air, the mixture has a higher percentage of gasoline, which can create black exhaust smoke. It's possible that a dirty or clogged air filter is preventing sufficient airflow into the carburetor.

Mower tipped over is the most common reason for white smoke. Usually, the customer turns over the mower to clean the deck or unclog the chute. This allows oil to enter the cylinder, and when the mower is restarted, the oil burns and turns your yard into a 70s disco.
