I have listed a dog training crate for sale under general items ... Is there a more specific category that would attract the person who might be seeking such an item?

There is a "Pets" category in the community section of Craigslist. I see a lot of fish tanks, pet supplies and animal cages listed there. You should be able to list your item in that section with no problems.
