Do not give up.

Flight check-in can be done from this webpage at United Airlines (Continental and United merged) which you probably tried to use before.

You can also go paperless with the Mobile Boarding Pass option. You can print it at home or have it faxed to you. But of course the site must be up and running for this to work.
