Call the number on the back of your debit card and contest the charge. Your bank should be able to remove the charge if you did not authorize it.

Don't waste your time trying to convince Classmates.com that you did not authorize the charge. They have a bad reputation when it comes to charging for services that people did not request.

How does anyone "unwittingly" agree to a charge? Not possible. If you were not aware of it, then it is a bogus charge.

Banks will almost always side with the customer. There's no way they will allow Classmates.com to pull this on their customer. They are getting a bad reputation with all these "unwittingly agreed to" charges and it must stop.

I don't agree with the previous answer, for 4 reasons:
  1. Chances are you may have unwittingly agreed to the charge, and if Classmates can show that, your appeal to you bank will almost certainly fail.
  2. It's likely in any case that before reversing the charge your bank will want documentation that you attempted to clear the charge with Classmates.
  3. If you do not communicate with Classmates, Classmates may continue to add charges annually.
  4. I have read a great many complaints similar to yours against Classmates, but have seen none at all claiming that Classmates did not itself reverse charges when so requested.

You can write the company with this form, but I urge you to send a certified snailmail to the company, giving them a reasonable time (say 10 days) in which to respond. Then if you don't receive satisfaction you can always appeal to your bank—but observe the bank's time limits, which you can learn by phoning the bank.

Here's Classmates's mailing address:

Classmates Online, Inc.
P.O. Box 1269
Renton, WA 98057

For additional protection you can if necessary change your renewal option from "automatic" to "manual" in the Account section of the Classmates website, under "Account & Billing."

You may also want to complain to the Washington Office of the Attorney General at 800-551-4636, or at http://www.atg.wa.gov/.

Good luck!
