Have A 2007 Pt Cruiser With A Parasitic Drain.

Had a mobile mechanic put in alternator and new battery last year, and have been having issues ever since. after installation my key fob stopped working, dome lights and lights that illuminate heater controls quit working, my AC immediately stopped blowing cold, had to replace ASD as well, so im not sure what he did or didnt do correctly, but at least check engine light went off and it seemed ok (with exception of those little issues) until my bent key broke off in ignition. I was still able to start car as long as i put the broken half attached to fob in the ignition. It was in there for about 3 weeks. I noticed I started to need a jump, it was causing battery to drain. When jumping the vehicle everyone connected negative cable directly to battery instead of post by hood latch, it didnt seem to give my battery enough juice to crank clamped on post. mind you this is a new battery. I replaced the key and thought it would stop the drain but it didnt. My check engine and battery light HAVE NOT come on. The battery jumps fine and I can drive fine, lights arent dimming no power loss but when it turns off and sits battery drains again. When its running and positive cable is disconnected it dies out like IT IS the alternator but no instrument cluster warning lights and the only code the obd is putting out is P1684. Did I fry my alternator from jumping car with cables directly to battery?

Possible Issues:

Short Circuit: The broken key fob in the ignition for 3 weeks might have caused a short circuit, draining the battery even when off.

Improper Alternator Installation: While the check engine light is off, the P1684 code could indicate issues with the alternator or its communication with the car's computer. The mechanic's installation might not be perfect.

Improper Jump Start: Jumping the car directly to the battery instead of the designated post could have damaged the alternator or other electrical components.

Recommendations:

Check for Electrical Drain: Take the car to a qualified mechanic and have them measure the battery drain with a diagnostic tool. This will pinpoint the source of the drain and confirm if it's a short circuit or something else.

Revisit Alternator Installation: Discuss the P1684 code and your concerns about the alternator installation with the mechanic who installed it. They can re-check their work and potentially identify any issues.

Consider Professional Evaluation: If the mechanic you previously used doesn't inspire confidence, it might be a good idea to get a second opinion from a reputable automotive repair shop. They can perform a thorough electrical system diagnosis and offer a more informed recommendation.

Additional Information:

It's unlikely that jumping the car directly to the battery fried the alternator unless there was pre-existing damage or improper procedures (like loose connections).

The lack of dimming lights while driving doesn't necessarily rule out an alternator issue.

The P1684 code might not directly relate to the battery drain, but it's still essential to investigate.

Hopefully, this information helps you troubleshoot the problem and get your Chrysler back in top shape. Remember, professional diagnosis and repair are crucial for electrical issues to avoid further damage and ensure safety.
