Malfunction Indicator Light.

This light has come on and then gone off for awhile, and now it has been back on for about a week. What causes this light to come on? I read the owners man, but it doesn't really say it basically says it could be a bunch of different things, yet says if this light blinks don't drive it any further. This worries me a little as this is my family car. Does anyone know anything about this?
