Trailer Light Module

I have a 2004 chev Astro that utilizes the same bulb & filament for both the brake lights and the directional lights. Why does this model need an interface module for a utility trailer? I have not looked for the module yet, but the telltale alternating flashing of the Astro verses the trailer tell me so

What does a blinking mean on my dashboard?

If the indicator is flashing, the error is in a major engine component and immediate attention is required. Severe vehicle damage or safety problems can occur if a flashing check engine light is not addressed.
