old fluid was burned black but found no metal shavings on magnets/230,000 miles

My guess is that your tranny overheated and warped the rear clutch plates. When they overheat, the plates get wavy and they won't fit tightly against the friction plates, so they slip and the tranny won't shift into the higher gears.

Here's what my rear clutch plates and friction plates looked like after I overheated my 72 Road Runner tranny. They are burned from the heat and warped. It's a pain to do a rebuild, but it can be done if you have the mechanical ability and the patience. I rebuilt my Torqueflite tranny for around $125.00 in parts (and fluid).
