'95 S10 Pickup With Smoke Under Hood

A 1995 Chevy S10 Pickup (manual transmission). Drove normal yesterday temp and oil gauges normal. Went out to start it this evening and there was a short popping noise (maybe with a little bit of a crackling sound) and the engine didn't catch and thick, acrid grey smoke came almost immediately out form under the hood on the passenger side up by the exterior vent. The smoke smelled more electrical in nature not oil smell. Weather has been very cool here for the past two days. Never had this problem or one like it before. What might this be? Nothing seemes to be melter or burned under the hood
