You must mean the alternator belt. Your car should have a serpentine belt, which drives the alternator, water pump and power steering pump. If that belt was loose, you would have more than one problem with the car.
You alternator is probably going bad. Remove it and take it to Autozone and they will bench test it for you. Just remember to disconnect the battery cables before removing or installing the alternator.
