How Do I Get Brake Light Switch To Work Properly?

I replaced the brake light switch on my 94 suburban because the old switch was moving along with the pedal and wouldn't turn on stop lights. I replaced it and installed a new one hoping that would fix the problem but it does the exact same thing...when I manually push on the brake switch it works but the pedal wont do anything just moves the light switch body olong with the push rod.
