How Do You Adjust Or Fix The Fuel Guage For A 94 Chevy S-10 Truck?

My gas guage reads a 1/4 tank more than what it actually has in the tank. So if it reads half a tank it only really has a quarter tank. What causes that? How can i fix? Do i need to buy new gas guage or is it on the sending unit side? It's on a 94 chevy s-10 truck. 6cyl. 4.3L automatic ext cab.
