Remove the negative battery cable from the battery before you begin to remove the starter. If you don't, you will get a nasty spark if you happen to touch both of the starter posts with your wrench or ratchet.
On most starters, you remove the two wires attached to the starter first. But if you have a tough time doing that due to space limitations, you can unbolt the starter first. Just remove the two big bolts holding it on to the engine block and then support the starter until you remove the two wires. This starter is VERY heavy, so take care when you remove it. Don't let it drop with the wires still attached because you could damage them.
Remove both wires from the starter posts and lower the starter out of the vehicle. If you see any shims when you remove the starter, be sure you remember where they went and how many there were. You must put the shims back in the correct location and they must be the same thickness as they were on the old starter.
Support the new starter and attach the wires to the posts. Place the shims (if there are any) in place and bolt up the starter. Make sure it goes in straight and engages correctly. Reattach the negative battery cable and your vehicle should start right up.
P.S. One more note. This year and model vehicle uses two different starters. One is for off-road use and one is for daily driving. The best way to find out which one you have is to remove it and take it to the auto parts store. That will guarantee that you get the right starter and save you the hassle of returning it if you pick the wrong one.
