What Does It Mean When The Break Light Come On?

Its a general warning light and could come on for various reasons regarding the braking system. Check the flid level and pull the rims and check the pads and shoes.
If the fluid level is low fill it with DOT3 brake fluid and beware that brake fluid does not get used up. If it is missing that means it went somewhere and you have a leak from either the seals in the master cylinder the line connections or the wheel cylinders. (brake fluid eats paint so take care and clean any spills up right away)
Not all pads and shoes have squeelers attached so you may not hear a squeel when they are used up. If the pads and/or shoes have little or no lining left on them then you must replace them asap. When it gets down to metal to metal then the rotors and drums start getting ate into which means a more expensive brake job because they will need to be lathed smooth again.
