Be sure to relieve the fuel pressure before doing any work on the pump. You relieve the fuel pressure by removing the fuel pump relay (fuse) and then cranking the engine. It should crank, but not start. If it starts, you removed the wrong fuse. That's the easiest way to relieve fuel pressure.
The fuel pump should be held in place with a simple lock washer. You should replace the strainer at the same time. Never put an old strainer on a new fuel pump. It's well worth the few dollars it costs to ensure that sediment or crud doesn't get into your new fuel pump..
