Paper Jam Error Message With No Paper Jam That I Can See

I have a Canon PC 745 copier. I'm getting the paper jam error message sign but can not find where any paper is jammed. I turn the machine off and error message goes away but try copying and the error sign shows up again without being able to copy anything. I've tried feeding a single sheet through by hand but the same error message appears. I've tried cleaning the inside of the machine but the error message keeps appearing every time I press copy. Any ideas what I can do?

The cause can be an actual jam, or a faulty sensor. These instructions will allow you to rule out the former (or in... In which case it will be fixed)

Take a piece of card stock or similar paper and force it through the paper path in the normal direction of the paper.

Since we know whatever is wrong is occurring post both feed mechanisms, use the feed that is most convenient for doing this... Probably the manual feed.

Once you do this, remove all paper and other loose parts and turn the printer over (or on its side if you cannot turn it over), and give it a good shake.

Then put the printer upright and see if the problem has been resolved. Fortunately this procedure corrects the "paper jam where we can't see one" over 75% of the time... You would be surprised at the thing that come out of some printers! In this case, if anything comes out, I suspect it will be paper.
