the needle for the temperature keeps jumping up and down. is this a sign of the thermostat being bad? if so where is it located and how hard is it to change out?

ok, at this point, it is most likley 2 things 1-temp gauge sensor or 2-thermostat. GM used a 2 phase thermostat, meaning, it opens very little at 180...then fully opens at 190/5 ...

location...easy, follow the top hose (standing, facing engine, it the toward the right) follow that hose back until it meets an alum. tube. (do this all when it is cold engine pls.)

NOW, follow this Alum. tube bak towards the intake Manifold. YOU are there... meaning this tube will come off with the 2 bolts, (need to disconnect thehose 1st though) secondly...on this tube, there is the temp sensor for the gauge. maybe the wiring is old, and you might find it broke, cool fix that your done... i would really look at the connection of wiring, sounds like thats the issue.

I can state, i changed my therostat to a colder 185 degree job, (not some 2stage OEM thermostat though) and that had fixed my issue with running warmer than it should

hope this helps
