If it's a scraping sound when you apply the brakes, you need new brake pads. It sounds like metal on metal, because that's what's happening. The material on the brake pad is worn off, so the metal brake pad backing is scraping against the metal brake rotors on your car.

You should replace the pads as soon as possible, so you don't do damage to your rotors. If you score your rotors, they will either have to be turned (ground down a little) or replaced, which can be expensive.

It sounds like you may need new brake pads. Or you might need to have your rotors turned. Brake pads can be $200-400 dollars to do all four of them, depending on where you get it done. You'll need a machine shop if the rotors need to be turned.
