2001 Buick Century Custom Gear Shift Light Faded

My mechanic told me it is a component not just a bulb that needs replacing and would cost at least $1,000. to fix.  Obviously I wouldn't pay to have this fixed.  Any other solutions?  I could put tape over it and mark each letter.  haha
