The check engine light is a scam, in my opinion. They come on for many reasons, most of which are pointless. Some cars have a check engine light that will automatically come on at a certain mileage, usually every 50,000 or 60,000 miles. That is just a way to get you to take it to your local dealership to have it checked out. Great way to pad the dealership's pocket.

It will also come on if your car backfires even once, if your car runs a little rich and many other reasons. Not a very reliable warning feature for any car.

Let's face it. If your check engine light actually came on for a serious problem, you would already know your car had a problem because it would be running lousy!
