Dual Climate Control Repair

i have 1998 buick gs with automatic dual climate/digital and the unit will not come on in automatic mode, the only way to make it function is to push the fan button on high then wait a few minutes and i dont know why that is, then you push it again the fan will come on at high speed but it blows hot and cold air between the driver and passenger side of the car
