Storm Touch Screen Misbehaving - Is It A Software Or Hardware Problem?

The touch screen has been fine for more than two years and suddenly four days ago for no apparent reason it does not work well. Often it will not give me an "f" or "r" letter and refuses to follow commands from the bottom bar (such as "delete"). It also does not scroll well at times. Is it the hardware dying or a software problem?
