Simple Use: Just A Microphone In Xlr Input & Amp In Output

I would like to make a very simple use of DSP2024 as a start...I just plug the microphone in the XLR input and I connect the Jack with a converter to CINCH to an amplifier...I hear the sound very very very low ... but none of the effects are applied to the sound of the voice...Can you please explain...Am I obliged to use a professional mixing table with "SEND/RETURN" to be able to operate the DSP2014 properly?Please advise
