A family member learned this the hard way and lost a ton of miles on American, not knowing there are other ways to keep your miles active. For instance, if you dine at a participating restaurant on American's Dining program, or stay at one of American's major hotel partners, rent a car from various companies, etc, you can still accrue miles and keep your miles active.
As long as you have mileage credit earned (can be from different sources, not just air travel) within 18 months, your frequent flyer miles will stay active.
Here is a link to American's Advantage program explaining the other ways to accrue miles in addition to air travel that will keep your miles active.

If your miles are expiring in February, you need to act fast. The activity (restaurant visit, hotel stay, car rental, airline travel) has to occur before the mileage expiration date. Make sure you sign up for the dining program or give the hotel or car company your mileage number to ensure you receive credit and keep your receipts in case you need to provide proof to American later.
