Do Major Airline A&p Mechanics Have To Start Their Careers At Regional Airlines

Or can they apply to Delta and United right after they get their A&P certificates?

A&P technicians must qualify to inspect/maintain large jet transports -
It is somewhat equivalent to a "type rating" as pilots get for large airplanes -
Then they also specialize in certain systems maintenance -
Electrical system, pressurization, hydraulics, powerplant etc -
In other countries, engineer's licenses indicate type airplane qualifications -

Basically, a regular A&P is qualified to inspect/maintain light airplanes -
Should you be hired by an airline you would be an "assistant" first -
All you might know to do is to check engine oil quantities or tire pressures -
And replace a failed motor of a flush of a cabin toilet -

Then the airline will have you trained to be qualified for some airplane types -
Boeing, or General Electric have courses for airline mechanics -
Avionics maintenance is also a prized qualification -
These may take several months to complete -
