The airline says, "If you canceled within 24 hours of booking and at least 2 days before departure, we'll process your refund automatically." To request your refund, see Request a Refund at https://prefunds.aa.com/refunds/.

If your upgrade was more than 24 hours from your booking, the above suggest that AA will not refund anything. On the other hand, if the airline canceled, you'd be entitled to a full refund.

How to request a refund from American Airlines?If you bought your American Airlines ticket directly from us, you can request a refund online or contact Reservations (Complete American Airlines customer service contact information). We'll process your refund back to the original credit card within 7 days (it should appear on your statement in 1-2 billing cycles)
