Screen Flicker Caused By Loose Cable

My Acer Aspire 4810TZ's screen will flicker and sometimes turn into a "sea of colors" when the laptop is bumped. After reading various posts I came to the conclusion that the cable that connects the LCD to the MB was loose on either LCD or MB side. I removed the plastic cover to the hinge and used a twist tie to secure the cable to the case. Since doing this the flicker problem is miuch less infrequent -- happens less than once/day. Questions: 1. Does my conclusion on the root-cause of the problem sound correct? 2. Is there any way to know which side the problem is on (LCD vs. MB connection). 3. Is it worth the effort to open the laptop up to resecure the conector, or should I "leave good enough alone"?

I hope a guess is good enough in this case since I cannot physically see your hardware. If I am correct it sounds like you are describing a loose video card connector. Loose connections of any kind can be very damaging to your system. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THIS ISSUE ON YOUR OWN! The parts are very small and soldering these parts can be quite tricky. I highly recommend sending your system in for service as soon as its affordable to you. A trained technician will be able to handle your issue with ease.

At the base of the screen under the bezel (the plastic surround that you removed) is a component called the inverter. This is the power supply for the screen. Most likely you have a loose/dry solder joint on there, so when you disturbed it you temporarily made good the connection. With time and with the internal heat generated the joint becomes loose again and yor problems start over again.

Your only permanent cure is to replace the inverter with new - you can probably find a replacement on ebay if you type in the laptop make and model number on ebay. The other possibility is the backlight bulb is failing, so if replacing the inverter doesn't work that would be your next step
