The center speaker is generally used for dialog of the people on screen (in a 5.1 setup with a movie or program mixed for such playback). People off screen will often be playing on left or right speakers indicating their direction from the point of view of screen. The center speaker almost never plays music or sound effects. Typically, if simply listening to a radio, CD or other non-movie/program audio source, there will be nothing playing on the center speaker. I hope that this helps you.
