The previous answer is misleading at best. No activation is required. You can verify this by phoning AARP at the number on the back of the card.

The AARP activation website allows a AARP member to register an account online.

Once an online account has been created the member can find local AARP events, print prescription discount cards, and update personal information. The site is free of charge and is administered by AAPR. To enroll in online service the AARP member will need the following:

  1. Member ID number
  2. First and Last name
  3. Date of Birth
