Per AAA, in the event of an accident: If you have comprehensive and collision coverage with your auto insurance, most insurance companies will cover the damage to the rental car. While the car is being repaired, the rental car company can charge you for the loss of use, which in most cases will not be covered by your auto insurance carrier. Some credit cards will cover the damage to the vehicle and loss of use by the rental car company.

Their suggestion is that you contact your carrier directly as well as your credit card company to see if they cover the loss of use to the car rental company.

Another problem can be your deductible and the loss of time it takes to settle the claim if you do not purchase insurance from the rental company. You have to determine if the additional cost is worth the hassle.

You can also find companies online who will also offer rental car coverage for considerably less per day than the rental company.
